Authors in Bloom Blog Hop!

Welcome to the 6th annual Authors in Bloom blog hop!
I'm excited to be participating again after a long dry-spell away from my blog. In this hop, you'll get a chance to learn a new gardening tip or recipe, check out some great books, and of course win prizes!

I'm not a big gardener—no backyard where I live—but I hope someday to get my hands dirty and start my own mini flower garden. To celebrate this celebrate this year's hop and the sale of my Queen Quartette series, I'll be offering 6 starter gardening tips for those who are interested in getting their hands dirty. ðŸ˜‰

Six Popular Gardening Tips

1) Before you plant, always draw a plan out on paper. Put taller plants towards the back of the garden and shorter plants at the front so you can see everything from a distance.
2) Don't try to grow things too close together. Read the backs of seed packs so you'll know how far apart your various plants should be. If you plant them too thickly, they won't produce as well.
3) Water your garden wisely. Never water in full sun. Water before the sun comes up or after it has set and with a good quality sprinkler. Your garden will get a lot more water this way.
4) Hang up noisy wind chimes. This will help keep deer away. Hang them so they swing freely and make noise and move them to another spot about once a week so they don't become used to them.
5) Weed early and often. And once your vegetables start growing, mulch your plants heavily to keep the weeds out. Don't let your garden get overrun with weeds or you will lose control.
6) Always wash your garden tools. Put them away in a cool, dry place. Spray the metal parts with vegetable oil in the late fall when you put your tools away for the winter.

My level of gardening is not the best. I do try until the first bush dies and then I get very disgusted!!!

My tip would make sure of how much water is required for each item, definitely do not overwater and drown them.

My comment is to pay attention to companion planting, such as don't plant tomatoes near peppers. It does make a difference. Thank you for this wonderful hop. catwoman-1(at)comcast(dot)net

I'd like to consider myself more experience with berries. I've been growing them for years and am always striving to produce as much as I can, because my three sons eat them as fast as I can pick them! I have a large strawberry patch and to keep the birds out we use windmills. They're a fun decoration and very effective. turtleemiwee(at)hotmail(dot)com

I'm not a great gardener but my mother was. My tip would be to try planting perennial flowers because they come up every year.

Thanks for the gardening tips. I'm often guilty of #2. I hate bald spots and forget it takes time for plants to spread. One day I'll learn. :-)

Thanks for the tips. I'm not the best gardener out there, as evidenced by my complete failure at getting anything to grow last year. I'll stick with the Aerogarden, which I have about a 75% success rate with.
