I'm not a big gardener—no backyard where I live—but I hope someday to get my hands dirty and start my own mini flower garden. Six Popular Gardening Tips

1) Before you plant, always draw a plan out on paper. Put taller plants towards the back of the garden and shorter plants at the front so you can see everything from a distance.

2) Don't try to grow things too close together. Read the backs of seed packs so you'll know how far apart your various plants should be. If you plant them too thickly, they won't produce as well. 

3) Water your garden wisely. Never water in full sun. Water before the sun comes up or after it has set and with a good quality sprinkler. Your garden will get a lot more water this way.

4) Hang up noisy wind chimes. This will help keep deer away. Hang them so they swing freely and make noise and move them to another spot about once a week so they don't become used to them.

5) Weed early and often. And once your vegetables start growing, mulch your plants heavily to keep the weeds out. Don't let your garden get overrun with weeds or you will lose control.

6) Always wash your garden tools. Put them away in a cool, dry place. Spray the metal parts with vegetable oil in the late fall when you put your tools away for the winter.
